The Go-Ahead :)

elderberryfarmsest

I officially received the build permit from the county and approval from the township for my proposed uses. I am so excited to finally begin the build that I delayed from last year due to the lockdown restrictions.

Today the foundation/footings received their "go ahead" and passed inspection. We also received our trusses and things are starting to come together at the farm!

The market has been approved for classes, weddings, harvest events, a small tasting counter for elderberry wine/mead/cider, and a fun farm-stay rental. These uses will compliment the farmer's market and u-pick operations for blueberries, elderberries, pumpkins, and lavender. Starting a farm from scratch comes with a high risk so I wanted to offer various avenues of revenue in case I would be facing "living in a van down by the river". ;)

How is the farm itself doing? I think a good synonym for farming is "shenanigans" because every day I face some sort of antics...i.e. the irrigation connections fell off, the field is being invaded by voles and I need a pet hawk named Igor, we received the wrong shipment of fabric mulch, etc. Each day I put on my big girl pants and keep my head up. And I love it. Despite the balancing dishes act, I truly enjoy the adventure we're on. Farming is such a blessing and to have a connection to food, medicine, and land is just a wholesome experience that honestly fills my soul. I cannot wait to share this slice of heaven with others! For now, my tentative plan is to open in the spring of 2022 but I may be able to offer a farm-stay experience before then, depending on when this build is completed. Stay tuned for more!

God bless

-Samantha
